The American Brilliant Period, a golden age in the history of cut glass, spanned from around 1876 to the early 20th century. During this era, skilled glass cutters, many of whom were immigrants, enabled glass houses in the United States to produce cut glass pieces that rivaled their European counterparts. Before this period, most cut glass pieces originated from England, Ireland, and France.
A pivotal moment for American cut glass occurred at the Centennial Exposition in Philadelphia in 1876, where American manufacturers showcased their clear, brilliant, leaded glass pieces. The quality and brilliance of these American works garnered newfound respect when compared to glass exhibits from other nations. From that point onwards, American cut glass became highly sought after as gift items, and most households of moderate to affluent means proudly displayed at least a few pieces to adorn their tables during holidays and year-round celebrations.
